When you come into a role, there seems to be just a ton of different places you can make an impact. But it's critical in that first year to be seen to be a leader that can actually accomplish things and has a sense of priorities.

There are three things that I have found were really critical in my first year: listening, prioritizing, and communicating. I don't think they're different for women. It's really about that first year as a CEO.

Before any other dream career I could have - and God knows I have many projects - I want to be a mum.

Yes, we've still got more work to do. More work to do for every American still in need of a good job or a raise, paid leave or a decent retirement; for every child who needs a sturdier ladder out of poverty or a world-class education; for everyone who has not yet felt the progress of these past seven and a half years.

If bringing up the next generation is important, why aren't they the best qualified, the best paid? Why aren't we as concerned about their career progression as we are about those who work in the education or health services?

When my writing career took off, it was pretty easy to keep my ego in check because old-school martial arts isn't about ego gratification. It's about maintaining a balanced view of the world and your place in it.
