Growing up, I watched shows such as 'Blackadder' and 'Monty Python' with my parents.

I've seen a lot of shows, but I can't possibly cram in everything that I'd like to, and it's exhausting trying to.

I always performed as a kid to make my family laugh and was more concerned with making kids at school laugh than I was about the lessons.

I went to drama school and, after that, went to Paris to train at a place called Ecole Philippe Gaulier. When I came home, I realised I'd have to have a serious stab at it. I didn't have an agent and didn't have the traditional drama school showcase, so I started a comedy group with a couple of friends.

I've been arrested several times. I've been known to dress in ludicrous fashions. I've also built a career out of negative reviews.

There were no museums or galleries in Shanghai, but I was very keen on art - I was always sketching and copying, and sometimes I think that my whole career as a writer has been the substitute work of an unfulfilled painter.

Since the 1980s, I've been known more for my TV work, I used to host 'Live at Jongleurs' and of course 'Grumpy Old Men,' and so it's really all come from there. It's been a funny career really, there are people that know me now as a TV person, a comedian, an interviewer - I've had people genuinely gobsmacked to find out I am a musician.

A lot of my career is mental, and I just have so much perspective from being raised in a city like Detroit and being able to come and live the life that I do now. To see that broad of a spectrum is really helpful for relating to people and feeling them.
