I grew up in a house of forthright women.

I've gone up for loads of jobs in the past that I knew were going to be terrible, and I've done my best, and I still haven't got them. So I think I've been lucky in who's decided I'd be worthy of their time.

When I say I hate nostalgia, I hate things set in the recent past where everything is shiny and new.

Put it this way: singing is not my day job.

The first four years of my career, I never complained. I never demanded. I never said anything about money.

I come from the corporate world, where everyone has a five-year plan, but performing arts doesn't work that way; you just kinda do the best job you can with the gig you've got.

When you do a writing job for a studio, one of the things you want to do is satisfy the expectations of your employer. That's a little bit different than when you sit down and write something to satisfy yourself, because then you're the employer.

Listen, I'm 41 years old. I've got two kids. I've got a career. The last thing I need to be doing is having a beef with A Tribe Called Quest. It's silly and it was unnecessary. It ain't the first time that a director hasn't seen eye to eye with a subject and it ain't going to be the last time.
